CID: The Dummy

"CID is a young, funky Crash Impact Dummy. He’s knows he’s cool, he knows he’s street, he knows he’s widdit. He’s not really sure where he’s heading in life. He kinda knows he’s destined for bigger things, but he’s stuck in this damn job…. He’s got a quick sense of humor, and uses his wit as a defense. "

The game is set in a near-future version of ourplanet. Litigiousness and refusal to accept responsibility has grown tosuch an extent that any product manufactured or sold by anyone, anywhere, has to pass a near-infinite barrage of safety tests. Be it asteamroller, a plimsoll, or a book, it’s got to be safety checked byindependent government bodies in triplicate, and only after long-termsafety testing can it be unleashed on the general public.

It’sin this world, with its laser-tight focus on safety, and rife withplease-don’t-sue-me attitudes, that the lowly Crash Impact Dummy roseto occupy its current position of importance. Back in the old days,Crash Impact Dummies were only used when studying car crashes. Aslawsuits became more prevalent, though, Professor B M Werken andD-Troit, joint owners of one of the main Crash Impact Dummymanufacturing plants, saw a gap in the market, and started creatingCrash Impact Dummies for other things. They started off with moreobvious uses like construction cranes and level crossings, but now makeCrash Impact Dummies responsible for checking the safety of sponges, dog toys, contact lenses, you name it.

Professor B M Werken is aman with a history, though. People wonder why he throws himself intohis work with such focus, 24/7. He explains that he just wants peopleto be safe, and the press are usually satisfied with his answer. Thetruth, though, is a little darker.

Why does the Professor fallout with his friend and business partner, D-Troit, who becomes his archenemy? What has driven the Professor to become so obsessed with productsafety? Why does D-Troit kidnap Mia, the Professors daughter?
