Need help finding a certain game

My friend showed me this game that was a rpg. it was released between 1998 and 2001... I played it at a friends house and liked it... bought it... found out about diablo2 and returned it.... all i know it was a rpg with a dark feel to it .... its been driving me crazy for the last week.... can any of you help me find this out... I know its not much info but any is appriciated

I think you could give more than that though.What era/setting was it,what sort of enemies did you fight.What were the play mechanics.What character was it you played.Legacy of kain comes to my mind but thats 1997.

it was over the head almost like diablos cept more of a side view
