Then compare that to, say, blacksmithing or alchemy where you can achieve max levels in half an hour or so.
They really fumbled the balance here in my opinion.

Admittedly, I've not played a complete game (due to the aforementioned graphics issues). I recall some problems getting specific skills up without using exploits from previous games, so I suppose you can consider that 'grindy'. I was recalling slaughter of thousands of those damned mosquito bird things everywhere from a previous game. Since my longest-running previous beautiful game environment was Guild Wars, this is decidedly less grindtastic.

I haven't been in dwarven ruins yet, but the couple I've been in are reminiscent of those from Fallout 3; I don't mind them at all but they're certainly not crawl-like.
