Throughout each level, numerous supply ships will appear which will drop power-ups and nukes for you to collect. These can range from a stronger shield to greater firepower, or even a wider spread for your shots. Also, some enemies will drop mega laser parts which, when collected, fills a bar in the top right of your screen. If you manage to collect four pieces without dying you are rewarded with the mega laser for a brief period. This laser destroys anything in its path and can make a great difference at a time of need. The power-ups and mega laser drops makes the game even more enjoyable as you frantically fight your way through the hordes of enemies while trying to pick up that much-needed shield or nuke.
It is to the developer's credit that PopCap has managed to create a game which is not only compelling but also sports one of the most simplistic control schemes in recent times. I mean how many games nowadays can be played with just three buttons? Yep that's right, the left and right of the D-pad control your tank, the right analogue stick controls the firing and the R2 button utilises your nukes. It really is that simple and while the game itself can be frustratingly difficult at times, the accessible controls are a Godsend feeding in to the addictive gameplay.
This brings up one of the main problems with the game... it's too damn addictive! This is largely due to the variety offered when replaying stages. Each level starts differently leaving an element of surprise as to which adversaries you'll face first. As such, there really isn't a guide to follow - the only tactic you can really use is to shoot everything that comes onto the screen, as quickly as you can.
The same tactic can be used for online gameplay too. While there is the option to make a custom game for you and your friends, the easiest way to play Heavy Weapon online is to click on the quick-play tab that'll throw you straight into the action with three other tanks. The most engaging multiplayer feature is the non-stop mode which throws countless enemies at you and your team mates. If you're lucky enough to find a team with decent communication you can last for a very long time and knowing just when to use your nukes can mean the difference between life and death.
Heavy Weapon is a sleeper hit waiting to be discovered by the PS3 community. The single player mode will keep you hooked for hours on end and the addition of an extremely challenging boss only mode - in which you only take on the game's bosses in sequence - adds to its appeal . Factor in the compelling online play and you have a great value, accessible blaster with a good deal of nostalgic charm.
