Major Australian stores not stocking PS Vita

PS VitaThe PS Vita has yet to be launched in Australia, but it already seems as though it's off to a bad start. Three of the land down under's major retailers will not be stocking Sony's new handheld at launch.

K-Mart, Target and Big W will not provide the system to retailers, however both Target and Big W have confirmed that they plan to purchase stock at a later date. K-Mart, in a strategic move to back away from expensive items, will not stock the Vita at all.

Of course, specialist electronic and videogame stores will make the system available from day one. However, the fear is that prices will stay high because of a lack of competition from the major, high volume retailers.

"For the launch of PlayStation Vita in Australia, with the specific target market being the active gamer, we have chosen to launch the console with a focused retail channel strategy across national specialist game and specialist technology retailers," Sony announced in a statement.

"There is a long term vision for our revolutionary new hand-held platform, in the same way we had a long term vision for PS3, and anticipate that in line with this we will broaden channel distribution in the future."

The PS Vita will launch next week, 22 February. Our reviews of the launch titles are going live over the next six days. Is WipEout 2048 any good? Find out in our review.
