If you've played both the PC and iOS/Android editions of Minecraft, then you'll know the the latter (dubbed Minecraft: Pocket Edition) contains a mere fraction of the content packed into the full game.
Mojang understands that Pocket Edition players want more, and they have confirmed plans are afoot to meet demand.
However, because the Pocket Edition was never planned as a feature-rich edition, a full code rewrite is required to add elements such as resources, crafting and monsters.
A post on Mojang's website explains that the team is aiming to release the first in a number of major updates for Pocket Edition on 8 February. First up are new blocks and "neat looking animals", as well as code that lays the framework for the inclusion of Survival mode.
Crafting will come in a later update as the team will first need to make the necessary interface changes.
