Nintendo has announced that the 3DS has sold more in its first nine months than the Wii did in the US. A little over 4 million units of the stereoscopic 3D handheld were sold in the US last year.
The numbers were surely helped by the dramatic price drop Nintendo slapped the console earlier this year, as well as strong performances from Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 (each selling over one million copies).
New Mario Party and Pokemon games were also confirmed for the 3DS.
Other stats included in Nintendo's year end round-up included:
- The Legend of Zelda: Skward Sword became the 45th Wii games to sell over one million units
- Over 4.5 million Wii's sold
- Over 3.4 million DS' sold (includes all variants of the system)
- Over 12 million hardware sales
- Install base of 39 million Wii in the US
- Install base of 51 million DS' in the US
