Activision: OnLive players are not 'legitimate gamers'

Onlive logoMega-publisher attacks 'cloud' gaming platform.

[Update: See below]

Trying to launch a new way of consuming games can't be easy. Trying to launch a new way of consuming games while one of the industry's biggest players is going out of its way to discredit you must be at least doubly-difficult.

The administrator of Activision's Spider-Man: Edge of Time Facebook page has made some rather stinging comments about OnLive. Specifically regarding the reason for the game not appearing on the service.

"We do not consider OnLive a platform for our game to appear on," a post on the Facebook page reads, before concluding that "We would rather focus on mainstream consoles and legitimate gamers."

The post has since been deleted following some angry comments from OnLive subscribers, including "Not sure why you would say that about OnLive gamers. We pay the same money as everyone else", and "I would love to know why you feel that about OnLive gamers."

We'd love to know why as well, which is why we've contact both Activision and OnLive for comment.

There you go, then. If you play games through OnLive then you're not a legitimate gamer in Activision's eyes. On the other side of the coin, if you're a 13 year-old kid playing an 18-rated Call of Duty game for eight hours a day and downloading every piece of DLC then you are a legitimate gamer. You're the 'most legitimate' probably.

I'm glad Activision's Facebook admin have sorted out the question of 'who are gamers?'. Of course, the post was probably written by an individual working to their own misguided agenda. The idea that a company the size of Activision would be so insensitive is unlikey (though not impossible).

Activision have since contacted us with the following statement:

"Activision's official source of news for our Marvel games is Facebook.com/HeroHQ or www.HeroHQ.com.  Anything posted elsewhere should not be taken as representative of Activision unless confirmed by Activision."

Thanks: EG
