EVE player council gains assurances over microtransactions

EVE OnlineA player-elected liason body for EVE Online, the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), has met with senior producer Arnar Gylfason and other CCP developers at an extraordinary summit meeting about the game.

As you may know, there's been considerable controversy around the game since the latest 'Incarna' update, focused on (but not limited to) the issue of microtransactions. As a result, an unusual meeting was called and CSM headed to Iceland to meet with CCP and hammer out some assurances over various player concerns.

It seems to have gone quite well, with joint statements being issued by both parties and progress made on a number of topics. Regarding the dreaded microtransactions, CSM had this to say:

"We are convinced that CCP has no plans to introduce any game-affecting virtual goods, only pure vanity items such as clothing and ship skins. We have been repeatedly assured that there are no plans for ‘gold ammo', ships which have different statistics from existing common hulls, or any other feared ‘game destroying' virtual goods or services. We have expressed our deep concern about potential grey areas that the introduction of virtual goods permits, and CCP has made a commitment to discuss any proposals that might fall into these grey areas in detail with CSM at the earliest possible stage."

Further to the discussions, a video featuring Arnar Gylfason and CSM Chair 'The Mittani' (whom you may recall used to be the Intelligence Director for Goon Swarm) has been posted. You can watch that, below.

This kind of direct dialogue between players and developers is quite rare, but always good to see.
