Valve have released a beta edition of Portal 2 Authoring Tools for Steam players. The tools provide access to seemingly everything the game has to offer; character skins, sound effects, 3D models and music. Both single and co-op levels can be created.

The latest edition of facial animation software 'Faceposer' is also included, along an "updated suite of command-line compiling utilities" and "example maps and instances to get you started".

To download the free tools you need to go to the 'Tools' tab within Steam.

In case you're wondering, we rather like Portal 2. To find out why you can read our review here.
