Hunting monsters and slaying zombies lead to 257% increase in profits.
Apparently, the way to take a prevously struggling company and make them profitable again is to release a helluva lot of sequels.
This is the approach taken by Capcom who have just announced overall profits for the past twelve months ending 31 March of $97.13 million (¥2.16 billion), a staggering 257% increase over the previous year.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was the Japanese develop/publisher's best selling game with 4.6 million copies sold during the fiscal year. Dead Rising 2 shipped 2.2 million, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 2 million, Street Fighter IV 1.6 million and Lost Planet 2 1.5 million.
Overall sales revenue hit $1.2 billion (¥97.7 billion), representing a 46% increase. The company's online games division saw revenues of $880.7 million (¥70.2 billion), an increase of 61% over last year. Capcom Mobile also had a good year with revenue up 13.3% to $50.4 million (¥4.02 billion).
Along with their financial results, Capcom released a statement that states that it is very aware that the recent environment disaster in Japan will impact the market and it is adopting a cautious approach to the future:
"The situation is expected to remain unpredictable as we face the greatest challenge, with the damages from the great earthquake and possible implementation of rolling blackouts resulting in immeasurable economic losses.
"In the videogame industry, a downturn in consumer confidence is feared as the consumer mindset voluntarily moves away from spending and leans excessively towards self-restraint. Accordingly it is believed that time will be required for the domestic game market to recover."
I can't help myself here, apologies. A note to THQ. Are you reading this? It is possible to release a lot of games and still turn a profit.
