Shock! Horror! Mobile games are popular

Results from a survey conducted by PopCap Games, publishers of casual hits such as Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, shows that 52% of the 2,425 people surveyed had played games on their mobile phones.

What isn't clear is just who these people are and what criteria was used to select them for participationin in the survey.  Of those surveyed, 83% that owned a 'smartphone' said that they had used the device as a gaming platform within the past week which, according to the survey, makes them "avid mobile phone gamers".

Scientific stuff.

The press release goes on to quote Dennis Ryan, EVP of Wotldwide Publishing at PopCap:

"Mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far," and that "as more people purchase smartphones... the mobiles games market is going to accelerate even more."

Other stats from the survey include:

- 84% of mobile phone gamers from the UK and US play games on their phone at least once a week
- 50% said their playing time has increased over the past year
- 44% said that their phone is what they use for playing games most often. 21% said they play most of their games on consoles and 30% highlighted computers as their device of choice.

Is your mobile phone your gaming platform of choice?  Do you spend more time playing games on your phone than on your console, PC or laptop?

Without being privy the selection criteria, it's wise to take these results with a generous pinch of salt.  Plus, as we all know, 82% of all stats are made up on the spot.
