Champions Online Announces Free-To-Play Model

Cryptic has revealed that its superhero-themed MMO, Champions Online, will be switching to a Free-To-Play model in early 2011.

A mini-hub site has been set up to explain how this will affect the game (not at all if you're a regular subscriber, you'll simply switch to the 'Gold' membership automatically.) Silver memberships will be free and open to all. As is usual in these cases, Silver members have free access but must purchase certain features (such as costumes, Gold travel powers and special devices) if they wish to use them.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Gold and Silver is that Silver players will be restricted to character "archetypes" where "you don't choose which abilities you acquire over time; instead, you advance similarly to class-based RPGs." Gold players retain complete control over their characters and can opt for custom classes.

A full FAQ about the changes can be read here, and a comparison matrix between the two planned levels of membership can be seen here. Cryptic also note that a "special closed beta" will begin on November 9, 2010.
