GameServers Secures Private Server Monopoly For CoD: Black Ops

GameServers.com has secured a monopoly on the provision of private dedicated servers to players of Call of Duty: Black Ops, according to an article at IGN.

There was much annoyance when Modern Warfare 2 dropped dedicated servers last year, particularly among PC users who saw this as a measure to prevent modding. Treyarch, the developer of Black Ops, has always presented itself as far more supportive of this scene, first suggesting that dedicated servers would be used and then putting the mod squad at ease.

Anyone planning to run a private, dedicated Black Ops server, however, will have to do so through GameServers.com. That'll cost you $15.00 USD / £10.00 GBP per month for a maximum of 18 ranked players, or $1.00 / £0.66 per player, per month for an unranked server.

Treyarch has confirmed that the developer-hosted dedicated servers will remain free. "Nobody will have to rent a dedicated server through GameServers in order to play the game," said community manager Josh Olin. "But for anybody who wants to run their own server, it will be run from GameServers.com."
