Electronic Arts has responded to criticism over its decision to allow gamers to play as the Taliban in Medal of Honour by telling IncGamers that players will not be “shocked or surprised by this”.
US TV station Fox News had broadcast an extended report about the game, slamming the publisher for its decision. The network’s Fox & Friends presenter described the title as: “allowing players to play as the Taliban against the US, with the objective of gunning down Amiercan troops.”
Karen Meredith, a Gold Star Mom whose son died in the Iraq War, then commented: "War is not a game, period. The fact that they've already done games about World War 2... that's far removed from our current history, people aren't dying in World War 2 any more.
In response, Electronic Arts issued a statement, which read: “In the multiplayer set-up, soldiers are fighting against the Taliban much like Allies fight Nazis in WWII shooter games. In Medal of Honor multiplayer, we give gamers the opportunity to play both sides. Most of us having been doing this since we were seven - if someone's the cop, someone's gotta be the robber, someone's gotta be the pirate and someone's gotta be the alien. In Medal of Honor multiplayer, someone's gotta be the Taliban.”
The firm added to this by telling IncGamers: “Nobody who plays videogames is going to be shocked or surprised by this.”
