Hopes of seeing the planned Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune movie adaptation in the near future have been dealt a whopping blow with news that Sony has failed to reach terms with its chosen director.
David O. Russell, of I Heart Huckabees Fame, had been in talks with the production company over turning Nathan Drake’s quest into the movie we all hoped Indiana Jones’ last ill-fated outing would be.
Sony had even planned to build the popular PS3 hit into its summer 2011 schedule, but discussions failed and the now rudderless adaptation will be forced to go back to the drawing board.
An Uncharted film has been in development since June 2009, but with no signs of stars or directors signed on, the eternal wait for an awesome game-to-movie adaptation goes on.
Uncharted fans can at least soothe their broken hearts with the news that Naughty Dog reckons that after the success of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, there’s plenty more mileage left in the console franchise.
"We've always felt that the Uncharted universe has strong potential to be a long-term franchise, even living outside of video game releases," says Arne Mayer.
"The Uncharted universe is a very deep universe populated by characters with rich backgrounds - and present and futures stories.
"We're definitely looking at ways to reveal more about our game universe and the characters that live within it - I think our fans are looking for more and we'd love to provide that to them.”
