Further to the story earlier today about Valve's Anti-Cheat (VAC) system getting a little over-zealous with some automated Modern Warfare 2 bans, the company has responded by reversing the erroneous decisions.
Those affected have received an email signed by Gabe Newell which states "Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you." Newell suggests that the false positives arose because "Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version."
The email also reveals that a staggering 12,000 people have been incorrectly banned over the past two weeks, and offers two freebie copies of Left 4 Dead 2 to each of them by way of compensation.
A thread at the Steam VAC forum contains the full text of Valve's statement.
