Activision has defended the commercial performance of DJ Hero, stressing it is “not a flop.”
In a blog post, Activision's “social media guy” Dan Amrich revealed that the music title has shifted 1.2 million copies since release.
"DJ Hero was dubbed a flop on its release too, but what it needed was time for its audience to find it, a price break, and positive word from both friends and reviews to circulate,” he wrote.
“October and November were soft, but after the holiday, DJ Hero had hit about 800,000 units; today it’s 1.2 million units and counting, all of which come with a turntable controller. That’s not a flop; that’s the long tail at work”
In the same post, Amrich also backs Activision's Blur which, depsite positive reviews, sold only 31,000 units in the US in May. Amrich puts this down to the game being released at a time when there was “too much choice”, as it competed with Split/Second and ModNation Racers, and that the data only counted one week in May. He expects post-May sales figures to improve due to a number of US retailer deals implemented in June.
