id: “You Really Need To Keep Your Eyes Open"

id Software has revealed it has kept a close eye on the shooter competition during the development of Rage.

We recently caught up with id's Tim Willits and asked him whether the developer preferred to look at other shooters or work in isolation. He explained that it is important to know what the competition is doing in order to stay relevant to gamers.

“You really need to keep your eyes open,” said Willits.

“For instance, our control configuration is the same as Call of Duty. When you get 20 million people to play it and they learn that 'that is the jump button', you know, don't change that.”

“We want people to get in, have fun and get through it,” he added.

“It is important to keep your eyes open and make sure that you're following what people expect, then move past that.”

Willits also gave us our first look at Rage, find out what we made of it in our preview.
