Mac Steam's Launch Details Revealed

Steam is due to launch on Macs on 12 May.

Every Wednesday, new titles will be made available, and each set of titles will highlight a specific part of Steam's Mac functionality.

The two titles that will launch with the platform on Wednesday are designed to highlight Steam Play, which means that any gamer with a Steam account can play it on any platform. As such, if you've purchased either of these two games before on your PC account, you'll also be able to play them if you log into Steam on a Mac. I'm sure you want to know what those two games are, however.

TorchlightThe first is Portal, Valve's hilarious physics-bending puzzler. It is utterly, utterly brilliant, and should be played by everyone. Valve notes that Portal is the first Source engine game available on Mac, and that "native OS/X support for the Source engine is also immediately available to licensees to use in their games." Hurrah.

The second title hitting tomorrow is Torchlight, Runic Games' brilliant dungeon crawler, and Runic's co-founder Max Schaefer reckons that having Steam on Macs is wonderful.

"Having Steam for the Mac solves so many problems for us as a developer," said Schaefer. "We're looking forward to our future games coming out on the Mac as well."

Valve notes that the Steamworks suite will also be hitting Macs, meaning that all of the anti-cheat, matchmaking, social, copy protection, and key authentication tech will be available for devs.

Tomorrow, then. Enjoy, Mac users. You've got two fantastic little games to start.
