Star Trek Online Console Cancellation Explained

Star Trek Online's Craig Zinkievich has spoken to IncGamers about the decision to drop the console version of the game.

Cryptic recently admitted that the console version of Champions Online had been shelved, and the company's CCO Bill Roper explained that it was due to the desire to concentrate all efforts onto the PC game rather than spread resources. It later transpired that the console version of STO had also been put on the back burner, so we contacted Cryptic to see exactly where things stand.

Star Trek Online“It’s about concentrating our efforts, yes. We’re re-dedicating ourselves to our PC player base and won’t be diverting any resources from the STO and CO teams to work on console ports of those games (which are enormous undertakings).” said Zinkievich.

Good news for the current players of course, but disappointing for some. However, console fans shouldn't abandon all hope of future Xbox 360 and/or PS3 projects from Cryptic:

“Because our core tech does run on consoles, and we’ve always had an interest in seeing our titles on as many platforms as possible, we may revisit console releases at some point in the future. Right now, we’re 100% focused on PC.”

Whether those future console games will include STO and CO is still something Cryptic is likely undecided upon. It'll be interesting to see if the company's top secret new MMO, as mentioned in our recent interview with Bill Roper and Jack Emmert, will have console options too.
