EA Forms Team Need For Speed

EA has formed Team Need for Speed, a real-life racing team.

Team Need for Speed currently consists of Vaughan Gittin Jr., Matt Powers, Edward Sandström, Patrick Söderlund, and Mad Mike Whiddett, with more drivers to be announced in the future.

If you follow racing, drifting, and the like, then you'll have spotted that those names comprise a variety of different nationalities and automotive disciplines.

Need for Speed World OnlineThe season will kick off on 9 April with Whiddett and Powers competing in the "Streets of Long Beach" Formula D event, followed by Söderlund and his teammate Sandström will be competing in the Stunden-Rennen race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Need for Speed will also be expanding its Formula D sponsorship with the Need for Speed Lounge, where attendees can meet Whiddett and Powers and get some quality time in with Need for Speed games.

There's also going to be a 12-part film series about Team Need for Speed and their cars, directed by automotive filmmaker Will Roegge.

Exciting times. We spoke to Patrick Söderlund back at last year's E3 to ask why Need for Speed: Shift would be brilliant, and were happy to see that it was, in fact, brilliant. The next Need for Speed title will be Need for Speed: World Online, a PC-exclusive MMO title that's due out in summer and is rapidly approaching beta.
