Champions Online's Console Version Scrapped

Cryptic Studios has revealed that it is no longer working on a console version of Champions Online.

In response to queries about the oft-mentioned console version, which was originally meant to be released around the same time as the PC version in September last year, Cryptic team member Jackalope informed fans on the game's official forums that it's not looking likely:

Champions Online“100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions.”

While it's good that Cryptic is set on getting the PC version right, it's a blow to anyone who's been eagerly awaiting news on the project. While speaking to the game's former executive producer, Bill Roper, back in March 2009 shortly after the first delay was announced, he said he thought the reason for the hold-up on the Xbox 360 version was on the business side:

“I think they're still in the process of working out details as to bringing the game to the console. We've continued to develop the game knowing that we want it to be on console eventually, so we make sure that the gameplay decisions and the mechanics will work on console as well as PC. I think it's just a great opportunity to reach out to console players and to bring them a really cool MMO.”

Back then, Roper also mentioned that a PS3 version wasn't totally out of the question eventually either. Read the full interview here.
