Joystiq has obtained documentation and confirmation that the Xbox 360 will soon support USB drives.
The documentation, obtained by Joystiq, claims that a "2010 Xbox 360 update" will let consumers save and load data to and from USB devices.
The long and short of it is that, once the update hits, 360 users will be able to download Xbox LIVE Arcade titles, Xbox LIVE Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC, and title updates to a USB device of their choice.
That said, the USB device needs to be at least 1GB in size, and is subject to a compatibility check from the system. The system partition will apparently occupy 512 MB of space, with the remainder of the device capacity (up to 16GB of it, anyway) can be used for storage. Owners can either use the entire device capacity, or they can use a Customise option to keep some or all of whatever they had on the drive before plugging it into their 360.
Interesting stuff, and it certainly seems to be true. We do note that the 16GB maximum is smaller than the smallest Xbox 360 hard drive of 20GB, however, and that there is a restriction in place - only two USB devices will be recognised at any given time, no matter how many you plug into the 360 at once.
We'll keep you posted when we hear more about the how and why.
