UK Gamers Spent £195m On MMOs In 2009

Consumer analysis has revealed that British gamers spent £195 million GBP on massively multiplayer games such as World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings online in 2009.

As seen in the charts below, the figures show that, although four million brits play MMOs, only 1.5m actually pay to play. The remaining 2.5m take part in free to play titles like Runescape and Runes of Magic and avoid any cost whatsoever.

£95m GBP of the total spent on MMOs in the UK last year went on subscription fees, closely followed by £76m GBP on microtransactions and in-game currency for free to play games. The remaining £24m GBP goes on the purchases of the games themselves.

British gamers spent more that our counterparts on the continent, Germany forked out £165m GBP and French gamers spent around £145m, but US players put the lot of us to shame; A whopping £2.55 billion GBP was shelled out on MMOs in the States last year.
