Codemasters has formally announced Bodycount, the forthcoming shooter designed by co-creator and designer of 2006's Black, Stuart Black.
Bodycount, in development at Codemasters Studios Guildford, uses "an evolution" of Codies' EGO engine, and it's due out in first quarter 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Bodycount was accidentally revealed early by OXM a few days ago, where it was described as "frankly mental," but we've now got some details.
Bodycount casts players as agents of a group called the "Network," sent out to take down "Targets" to aid in a "clandestine global power struggle." It's all about the destructible cover, it seems, with both you and your opponents being able to tear through it using contemporary weapons.
"If Race Driver: GRID was all about the purity of racing, then everything in Bodycount is absolutely centred on the bullet and its impact in the world," said creative director Stuart Black. "Our shredding tech enables us to create a different kind of gameplay, where players and AI can't hide behind indestructible cover and rely on whack-a-mole mechanics." Sounds a lot like what Black said back when the game was still unannounced.
Happily, Bodycount is also set to support both online multiplayer and co-op gameplay. Check out the first screenshots of the shooter, due out in first quarter 2011, below.
