TIGA: More Varied Pricing For Games Likely

TIGAUK games industry body TIGA expects more varied pricing models for games to be implemented as the industry evolves.

Speaking to IncGamers, TIGA CEO Richard Wilson explained that publishers will look at new ways to market games.

“Many game developers and publishers will be looking at DLC as a way of minimising the threat from piracy,” he said.

“Others will use DLC as a way of attracting and maintaining customers to their games. If done well it could be an effective business model.

“In broad terms, the industry is likely to see a more diverse mix of price points and game experiences and a move away from the traditional boxed products model,” he added.

“However, the traditional boxed titles are still a very large part of the market and will be so for some time to come.”

Earlier this week, EA Canada’s Jason DeLong predicted that game prices will fall as publishers offer a more limited initial gaming experience which will then be expanded by DLC. However, UK industry expert Nicholas Lovell warned that publishers may risk annoying gamers and that a DLC-focused pricing model will be a “tricky balancing act.”
