Europe's PS3 Video Service Live Today

General ScreenshotSony launches the PlayStation Network video delivery service in Europe today, allowing PS3 and PSP users to download hundreds of films, including latest releases, straight to their devices.

The service is available in the UK, France, Spain and Germany, and offers a selection of 800 (or 2000 depending which press release you believe) films to buy or rent. Purchasing a film costs £6.99 GBP, whereas renting one will sent you back just £2.49 GBP. Anyone who choose to rent has up to 14 days to watch their film and, once playback is started, they have 48 hours to watch the content.

The range of films that are available at launch includes The Dark Knight, Drag Me To Hell, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation and Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Around 50 films will added to the list on a weekly basis, according to SCEE boss Andrew House, while speaking to GI.

Many of the films are available in HD as well as SD, however, HD content will only be available to rent initially.

Users can search through films by category, such as 'genre', 'new releases' and 'most popular downloads'. The PS3's progressive downloading system also allows users to start watching a film shortly after the download begins. Any purchased film can be transferred to a PSP for viewing on the go.
