Star of the upcoming Prince of Persia film, Jake Gyllenhaal, has spoken about his hopes for the film, and how he feels it's more than just another video game adaptation.
Given the history of games that have made it to the big screen, one can be forgiven for writing the PoP film off as another potential flop. Despite a star-studded cast, 1994's Street Fighter went down like the proverbial lead balloon, not to mention Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon.
However, that hasn't stopped film makers churning out more game-inspired films. Next year, production begins on the Warcraft film, and another installment of the Resident Evil series will be released.
Gyllenhaal believes PoP has more potential than some past adaptations. While speaking to moviefone, he explained why he got involved with the project. "It wasn't like your normal video game adaptation," says the actor. "It was this massive epic that they had in the works; this real classic story that was emotional and real and filled with just ridiculous turns and twists. And that's what makes it intriguing to me."
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which co-stars Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley, is due to be released on 28 May 2010. There have also been indications that a new game will be announced in the spring.
