The Beatles: Rock Band Outsells Competition In US

Apple, MTV and Harmonix have announced that The Beatles: Rock Band was the top selling music game in the US in September.

The game, which we reviewed last month, also placed at number two across all genres by revenue last month. The charity track “All You Need is Love”, which raised money for Doctors Without Borders, was also downloaded more than 100,000 times in September.

The Beatles: Rock BandMTV Games’ Scott Guthrie told GamaSutra that the game was clearly outperforming its main rival, Guitar Hero 5, despite the latter being bundled with a free copy of Guitar Hero Van Halen (I feel dirty just typing that).

"We outsold them two-to-one on a revenue basis and we outperformed on a unit basis as well, despite the fact that they had an eight-day advantage, and were giving away free software," he said.

"At the end of the day, The Beatles: Rock Band clearly outperformed them, and we're not done yet. We're anticipating a very successful holiday period."

He went on to praise developer Harmonix for the quality of its products.

"Innovation is going to be the key factor for this genre, [and] that's why we're thrilled to be working with the guys at Harmonix,” he said.

“They will continue to lead the way. It's just us tagging for the sales and marketing."
