EA Sports has announced the FIFA 10 Interactive World Cup (FIWC) will begin today on the PS3.
This will be the sixth season of the competition and the first to centre around EA Sports’ new FIFA 10. As well as an online portion of the competition held over PSN, the tournament also offers players a chance to make the grand final by taking part in one of ten live qualifier events held in Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Poland, Russia, South Africa and the UK.
The PSN competition will be divided into two seasons, with the first having already begun on 2 October and set to finish on 18 December. The ten best players from season one will go on to the live grand final in Port Olympic, Barcelona on 1 May 2010. Those who didn’t make it in season one, will get the chance to try again in season two which kicks off on 4 January, concluding on 31 March 2010.
Registration for the FIWC takes place “directly inside the retail version of FIFA 10 on PS3 from 2 October across Europe and Asia and from 20 October in North America.”
The 2009 FIWC champion Bruce Grannec will also return to the competition and the 31 finalists will compete for the first prize of $20,000 USD and an invitation to the FIFA World Player Gala. The runner up will receive $5,000 USD, with third place winning $1,000 USD.
“More than 500,000 players vied for a spot in the Grand Final at last year’s FIFA Interactive World Cup. This makes it the FIFA tournament with the most competitors,” said Chuck Blazer of the FIFA Executive Committee and patron of the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC).
“The FIWC is becoming more and more popular among all age groups and the great thing is that everybody can participate. Players can face each other whenever they want and wherever they are – this is truly unique.”
Stay tuned for our FIFA 10 review due later today.
