Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition Detailed

Resident Evil 5Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition has been detailed by Capcom.

The Alternative Edition, coming exclusively to PlayStation 3, rejigs the original Resident Evil 5 in order to add motion controls - as well as adding in a brand new chapter.

The motion controls will be realised through the nameless wand peripheral due to hit the PS3 in spring, although it doesn't appear to be essential. According to IGN, staff members at the Tokyo Game Show briefing for the game controlled the title by moving with the DualShock and aiming with the wand, but controlling the game fully through DualShock is naturally possible.

The wand looks to be used for aiming as well as other "combat elements," like swinging a knife.

More exciting is the news of a new chapter, though, which goes back a few years and allows fans to play through Ozwell Spencer's castle - quite an important location to Resident Evil 5, if you remember the flashbacks - as a team of Chris and Jill.

The castle was originally intended to be in the game proper, according to Famitsu (via IGN), but didn't fit in with the flow of the game. As such, prospective players will have to select it seperately from Resi's main story mode in the menu.

But why isn't it DLC? Apparently, it's just too big. Still, 360 owners who want to get their hands on it needn't worry too much - it will apparently be coming to 360, but in a different form.

Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition is due out on PlayStation 3 in Japan in spring 2010. Expect a western release later.
