Nier Spin-Off Teased, Release Consoles Vague

Square ENiernix has teased a second Nier title in the latest Famitsu.

Kotaku reports that the latest Famitsu Weekly contains a teaser image for something called Nier Replicant, and that what we previously thought of as Nier may now be called Nier Gestalt.

The Replicant image shows a woman with white hair, but what's doubly interesting is that Nier Gestalt is only being reported on as an Xbox 360 title in Japan, while it was previously known to be for both 360 and PlayStation 3.

Square Enix told Kotaku that the Famitsu adverts that show what appear to be the two separate games "do not affect the North American version."

It's a weird one, certainly. Could the game be split into two for Japan? Could Nier Replicant be more in line with what the Japanese might want from the title, as Nier is geared towards a western audience? Could Replicant be a PS3 exclusive in Japan? Is the Japanese release splitting Nier into two games?

We haven't got a clue but we'll let you know when we find out, which may well be in next week's Famitsu. Stay tuned.

If you haven't heard about Nier, it's Square Enix's take on the third-person action-adventure genre that's all about the western audience, with the Japanese giant designing and marketing it specifically for cultures other than their own. It sounds interesting, certainly, and you can check out our first look for details.
