Crackdown 2 Details Explode

Crackdown 2Crackdown 2 details have emerged in the latest GameInformer magazine and have since been posted on the internet.

We've compiled the information we have below, which is all taken from this NeoGAF post, and some thanks to CVG.

First off, the game takes place in the same city as the first game, with the architecture largely remaining the same. The roads are all exactly the same, it seems, and while some buildings have been demolished and others put up, the layout is going to be familiar to anyone who played the first.

This time around, though, the agency is stuck in a three-way war. Thanks to the Agency's bungling, a super-virus was released that turns people into zombie mutant things, and this resulted in a civilian group called the Cell striking back. The Agency lost control of the city and only now that the agent program has been repaired can they start taking the city back from both the mutants and the Cell.

Except a similar, "cartoony" look and feel despite the somewhat grittier graphics, skill-based shooting, more weapon variety (with sticky grenades, a new shotgun, and a rail gun teased), a day/night cycle that varies up missions - at least partly because night is when the mutants come out to play - and a whole lot more. The city will decay from the infection over time as your mutant enemies start to evolve, and you'll see plenty of returning vehicles as well as some new ones. Like a helicopter.

More interesting still is that support points are gone, with agents now able to call for ammo and supplies at any time, and that you'll obtain skill orbs by using relevant abilities. Whether or not that means agility orbs are back or not remains to be seen, but we can't imagine such a loved reward for exploration will be vanishing entirely.

And then there's the multiplayer front, with four-player co-op (and more instances, during the campaign, where co-op play will be prudent) as well as - whisper it - 16 player competitive multiplayer. This is set to feature special weapons, bonuses, and gadgets, and will also have a Call of Duty-style progression system.

Crackdown 2 is due out on Xbox 360 at some undetermined point before the sun turns the earth into mass of scorched rock. So probably 2010, then.
