Sega has revealed that a new 2D Sonic game is in development.
The game, codenamed Project Needlemouse, is due out in 2010 but there's been no word on what systems will see it on. Sega's associate brand manager Ken Balough confirmed to Gamespot that the game will feature HD graphics, so we'd take a guess at 360 and PS3.
Balough also mentioned that the game is "that critical first step" in taking Sonic back to his 2D roots, with Needlemouse being built, in part, for the fans. "Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay," he said, adding "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis."
A teaser trailer for the unnamed title displays the words "Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up," intercutting them with a familiar blue blur that jets around the black screen grabbing rings, before displaying the logo you can see to the upper right and then the numbers 2010. And, uh, that's literally all.
We're expecting to hear more on Project Needlemouse's actual name and gameplay before too long, but one way or another, the 2D Sonic game is due out 2010. Hopefully it'll be better than Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic Unleashed.
