Microsoft has recently dropped its technical certification requirement (TCR) that all games achieve a resolution of 720p.
According to Pure developer Black Rock Studios, Microsoft no longer insists on a 1270x720 (720p) resolution for Xbox 360 games as most LCD TVs upscale the image to 1366x768.
Black Rock’s David Jeffries told Develop that the visual result may be better if developers produce a lower resolution, better anti-aliased image which the TV will then upscale and it’s for this reason that Microsoft has recently dropped the TCR.
Of course, some “lucky” developers were exempted from the TCR anyway, which is why Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 did not appear in 720p.
