PlanetSide Server Merge Announced

The remaining two servers for the FPS MMO, PlanetSide, will merge on 25 August, it was announced earlier.

In a post on the official forums, community relations manager Joel "Raijinn" Sasaki informed players that the merger of the Werner (European) and Gemini (US) servers will be carried out to “maintain a high level competition and gameplay within the three empires”. His main concern seemed to be that there would be many character name conflicts, and goes on to explain that priority will be given the the character that was most recently logged in, and those that have created their names first.

Contrary to the usual reaction from players when told of server mergers, the PlanetSide community has responded positively to the news.

There were originally five servers when the game launched in 2003, however, later in the same year the four US servers merged into two. Last year, the two remaining US servers, Emerald and Markov, merged to form Gemini. Many players on the Werner server also moved to Gemini at the same time, leaving Werner almost empty all this time.

Check out the reaction to the news on the PlanetSide forums.
