Darkest Of Days In September

8monkey Labs and Phantom EFX have announced that time-hopping FPS Darkest of Days will be launching on 8 September.

The PC and 360 game gives playes control over Alexander Morris, fated to die at the Battle of Little Bighorn before a time agent warps in and transports him to the future, where Morris is conscripted to stop a faction from re-writing history for their own benefit.

Expect to go through some of humanity's darkest hours, including the Battle of Antietam and both World Wars. During these events you're going to have to save key individuals who were apparently not meant to become involved in these situations, and change history for the better - which seems ethically at odds with stopping others from re-writing history, regardless of whether it's for the better or not as it's surely just changing the number and type of people who benefit, but let's not get into that argument.

The game uses a brand new engine with hundreds of NPCs on screen at any time, wide-open environments, and some smart AI. People in combat marked with a blue glow need to be kept alive, so spray-and-pray won't work all that well.

An FPS with a lot of people who need keeping alive? Hmm. We're willing to give any game that allows you to use modern tech in a historical environment the benefit of the doubt, though, and fighting through Custer's last stand with an M-16 is more than appealing. With the 8 September release, we expect to hear more soon.
