Miyamoto Made Up Wii Sports Resort Golf On The Spot

There were no plans for golf in Wii Sports Resort until Shigeru Miyamoto told journalists that it would be included.

The news comes from the latest Iwata Asks column on the Wii website, in which Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata essentially interviews the assembled crowd.

This time around, Iwata quizzes the Wii Sports Resort team - including gaming auteur Shigeru Miyamoto.

During the course of the conversation, it's revealed that golf was never planned until Miyamoto told journalists that it would be included. The excerpt follows:

"[Takayuki] Shimamura: Right after getting back to Japan [from E3 '08, Miyamoto] suddenly said "You know we're including golf now." Apparently he'd stated in an interview that this time round golf shots would be determined by the backswing, even though at that time a golf game didn't exist in any shape or form! (laughs)"

This was only the first such occasion that occured with golf, with another following:

"Shimamura: We originally planned to have a 9 hole course as we had on Wii Sports. We were developing the game basd on the plan for a 9 hole course when the producer, (Katsuya) Eguchi-san, announced that Miyamoto-san had been speaking to Iwata-san. When we asked what they had been discussing, we were told: 'Golf is going to be 18 holes after all.' I did wonder if it was really true though..."

You can check out the full Iwata Asks section right here, with the sections quoted both in section six. Be sure to have a look at our Wii Sports Resort preview, while you're at it - if it's not on your list, it should be.
