Sega Announces Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

Sega has just announced the development of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

The game looks to follow up on Sega Superstars Tennis, which took popular Sega characters and shunted them into a tennis game, while this does much the same with the racing genre.

It looks a tad Mario Kart with plenty of characters, ranging from Sonic and Eggman to Amigo and AiAi, who each have their own All Star movie. Examples given include Super Sonic, Banana Blitz, and Tails Tornado. Expect plenty of weapons and powerups around the courses, in addition to a load of secret shortcuts.

Sega Europe's European marketing director, Gary Knight, seems excited, claiming it's "no ordinary racing game."

"Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off set it apart from other games of this type." He adds that the team "have pushed the boundaries on what you would normally expect and created a different and unique party racing title whereby you really can't take anything for granted!"

The multiplayer Knight mentions works as either four-player split-screen, if you're on one console, or eight-player online.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is due out sometime in 2010 for 360, PS3, Wii, and DS. You can see the first screenshots, from the 360 and PS3 versions, below.
