RMT Tested For Champions Online

Cryptic Studios is trying out a Real Money Trading (RMT) system in the Champions Online beta.

In the closed beta of the super-hero MMO, a "Champions Store" option is available, but currently not working. The word "microtransactions" is used in the error message.

In a statement, the company confirmed it is "currently testing functionality for in-game transactions," but don't "have any finalised plans for how and if these will be implemented in future releases."

Some sort of microtransactions will likely be implemented. The statement says it's "a necessary component of the greater Cryptic platform since we plan on working on a number of different titles using our technology platform."

The game is currently planned to be released as a standard subscription MMO when it reach Europe and North America 14 July. Chief creative officer Jack Emmert has in the past shown disgust over RMT, so no plans are yet confirmed.

More information about the closed beta can be found in our hands-on preview, and Bill Roper explains mechanics and development of the game in our interview with him.
