The Sims 3 Features No DRM

The Sims 3 will feature no DRM.

The only copy protection in the game, revealed on the website for the hugely anticipated game, will be a serial code for the disc - just like The Sims 2. No online authorisation, no rootkits. Just a CD key.

Rod Humble revealed this information on The Sims 3 website yesterday. In explaining the decision behind the lack of DRM, Humble said "We feel like this is a good, time-proven solution that makes it easy for you to play the game without DRM methods that feel overly invasive or leave you concerned about authorization server access in the distant future."

This is an interesting move for EA, particularly following the furore that surrounded the DRM for Spore and Red Alert 3. This also follows various GDC keynotes touching on DRM, such as Ron Carmel of World of Goo fame calling it "a waste of time," and Valve claiming to have made DRM "obsolete."

The Sims 3 is due out on 2 June 2009, on PC and Mac.
