Blizzard Fans Furious Over Cast Changes In StarCraft 2
 Gunnar Petzall

Thousands of Blizzard fans are up in arms over the news that two of their favourite characters from the original game, will be voiced by different actors in Starcraft 2.

Since the first rumours that the original actors might not return (at least not Robert Clotworthy, the voice of Jim Raynor), there has been some unrest in the StarCraft community, and the issue has escalated with the announcement that Blizzard has started auditions for the voices of Jim Raynor and Sarah Kerrigan, according to IncGamers' StarCraft network site.

These auditions came as a bit of a surprise for Glynnis Talken, the voice of Sarah Kerigan, who had already been confirmed to be involved with further voice acting, and can actually be heard in the sneak-peek cinematics recorded for StarCraft 2 pre-alpha. There was further fan reaction, and fansite polls popped up.

As the auditions came and went, it became clear that even though Robert and Glynnis had both expressed an interest in returning for StarCraft 2, neither of them would. While it's likely too late to do anything about it, the fan reactions have now increased tenfold, with internet petitions, vocal reactions and polls on Blizzard's official forums, as well as more fansite reactions - and even videos urging the community to ask Blizzard to bring back the original authors.

Even though many feel strongly about this issue, most of the fans have also clearly stated that it's not a "deal breaker"; they will buy and play StarCraft 2 even without their favourite actors, but although want their favourite characters to sound the same. Fans with less interest in the actual storyline don't care at all: StarCraft is primarily a multiplayer RTS game. In the end we'll just have to wait and see what Blizzard chooses to do.

Its not that blizzard dosen't want the voice talent back. It is more of the fact that a lot of the original cast is no longer with the company.

As a matter of fact the guy who did the voice acting for General Duke is no longer alive as he passed away some years ago.

I had a chance to talk w/ Russel Brower(audio director/music) and Chris Metzen(VP creative development) at blizzcon and they both stated that they would of loved to have some of the original actors back.

However with that said Chris also stated that it gave them a chance to look for talent that better suited the roles.

For example Chris always wanted more a grungier, dirtier, and more outlawish voice to play Jim Raynor. He feels that the new talent better suits his vision of the original Jim Raynor. Jim Raynor is Chris' boy, the character was designed by Chris himself. He even called him 'Jimmy boy' at blizzcon lol...

But yeah hopefully that clears some things up. For News sites I really really wish you guys would do some research on this more before posting some things. As for the community I know people are upset but you guys really should do your research first to see if it is even possible to get the original voice actors back before starting online petitions. Seriously!

However, what sparked the largest controversy over this issue were 2 things -

One: Robert Clotworthy was not given a chance to audition for the part.

Two: (The most recent news) Glynnis Talken HAD been in & recorded lines with Blizzard for StarCraft 2 already, and had recorded lines that have already been shown in SC2 in two scenes at Blizzcon last year - The Kerrigan Reveal Trailer, and the Kerrigan Flashback Animatic.

I wrote an article for SCLegacy.com (their front page is currently under revision) talking about the importance of Voice Acting in SC2. Having been in loose e-mail contact with Glynnis throughout StarCraft 2's development since it's announcement, after I put the article up, I got a response from her stating that Blizzard had just called and stated that they would not be using her in SC2.

The big issue that many of the fans have is that StarCraft 2 was made into a trilogy for the fans of the Single Player, and this move seems to be going against what most of the main singleplayer fans want to see in the game, (especially in flashback scenes like the Kerrigan Animatic trailer, where having the original voices is something that's impossible to fake, and brings back the nostalgia of when you first heard them).

I'm aware that several of the VAs for StarCraft have passed away, but the most recent news about Glynnis Talken is what stirred the issue back up, because she HAD been shown and given an audition by Blizzard and could have been hired, and many fans consider her voice irreplaceable, and very important to her character.

Indeed X-Soldier, it's clear these actors weren't offered the parts again, nevermind Blizzard saying they'd love to have them back.
