Digital Downloads Defy Economic Downturn

Despite slower sales at high street game retailers during the holiday period, digital downloads are booming according to digital download operator Metaboli.

Metaboli today revealed a 172% growth in its European revenue during December 2008 for game sales, and a 471% increase in the UK alone for the same month. The increase has partly been attributed to the European release of GTA IV as Metaboli had the exclusive digital download rights to the title.

Metaboli currently run two digital download services, Metaboli.co.uk which includes a catalogue of game titles which are available through their two subscription packages, and Gamesplanet which deals with newer releases.

With publishers looking for ways to cut costs, gamers will start to find more and more games available through the digital download platform in the months to come.
