Jeff Gardiner, lead producer of Fallout 3, has confirmed Operation: Anchorage DLC will be coming in January.

We recently reported that Operation: Anchorage was imminent, but now we know just that little bit more. Basically it's a trip into the history of Fallout 3 and is a counter-offensive training simulation used by the government to stop the Chinese army rising to power again.

The focus of the DLC pack will be on stealth and combat, and having lost all resources, adventurers will have to survive within the simulator’s parameters.

As well as new armour, weapons and tools, there will be a Covert Ops perk as well as new achievements.  No trophies as there are still no plans for a PS3 DLC package, so this will only apply to PC and 360 users.

Speaking to IGN, Gardiner said that the team’s focus was on creativity.

“It's important to our team to use DLC as a way for us to flex our creativity, to try new things and answer the ‘wouldn't have been cool if we did this?’ question that always comes up towards a games completion.”

Based in “the frozen north” and built from scratch, the art style is “vastly different” to the Fallout 3 experience.  In addition to this, Gardiner also states NPCs will “interact better, more convincing” in this new world.

Level capping, on the other hand, will not be lifted with this DLC.

“[T]he plan is currently for the third DLC, Broken Steel, to increase the level cap. This will be accompanied by new foes, perks and all of the other Fallout 3 staples our fans expect.”

You’ll be able to access the DLC at any point within the game, as long as you’ve left the vault, a quest objective and map marker will tell you where to go.

Operation: Anchorage will set you back 800 Microsoft Points and will add around four to five hours of gameplay.

So, something for after Christmas ‘eh?  Check out our reviews of Fallout 3.
