Gary Gygax, co-founder of the original pencil and paper role-playing game, ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ passed away yesterday at the age of 69. His wife says he had been ill for some time.
‘D&D’ was created by Gygax and Dave Ameson, way back in 1974 and introduced the concept of an adventure set by a Dungeon Master with players stepping into the roles of their characters. Today, an estimated 20 million people have rolled for damage playing ‘D&D’.
This is a gaming legacy that lives on today, with ‘D&D’ alone putting its name to a film, books and of course ‘D&D online’. However, the supreme MMO ‘WoW’ and many others besides owe a lot to Gygax and Ameson, so doff your cap to the godfather of role-playing.
