MMOs Rated in Australia, Finally

Massively Multiplayer Online games such as World of Warcraft have been given an official rating by the Australian classification board, after being threatened with a ban earlier in the year.

In February. a loophole in the games classification system was highlighted, which allowed games that took place wholly online to go on sale without a rating. The Australian government declared that MMOs without a rating were on sale illegally and should be withdrawn from sale, although the mass-withdraw never happened.

This week, the Australian OFLC department has finally rated World of Warcraft and its expansions, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, with an M-rating for “Fantasy Violence”. It has taken the department five years to lay down the rules on online games that do not have a single-player or LAN capability.
