MMOs Rated in Australia, Finally
 Bill Vaughan

Massively Multiplayer Online games such as World of Warcraft have been given an official rating by the Australian classification board, after being threatened with a ban earlier in the year.

World of WarcraftIn February. a loophole in the games classification system was highlighted, which allowed games that took place wholly online to go on sale without a rating. The Australian government declared that MMOs without a rating were on sale illegally and should be withdrawn from sale, although the mass-withdraw never happened.

This week, the Australian OFLC department has finally rated World of Warcraft and its expansions, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, with an M-rating for “Fantasy Violence”. It has taken the department five years to lay down the rules on online games that do not have a single-player or LAN capability.
