‘WoW’ Tournament
 Paul Younger

Blizzard Entertainment is offering ‘World of Warcraft’ players the chance to win cash prizes totally over $200,000 in a new tournament competition.

Tournaments will take place using the Arena System, allowing competitors to instantly create level-70 characters with epic equipment. Players will be expected to use tactics and clever axe-wielding to win the day, rather than collecting wolf pelts and bartering for magic beans.

“eSports is one of the most exciting facets of online gaming today,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased to expand 'World of Warcraft’s' tournament options for players who want to focus mainly on the competitive aspect of the game.”

The competition tournaments begin in April with two rounds of online qualifiers in Europe, South Korea, North America and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Each qualifie round will have a per competitor entry fee of £12 in Europe and will run for six weeks. During this time, teams will play 3 vs 3 matches and the top four teams from each round will advance to the regional finals.

Finalists will compete for more than $27,000 in cash prizes. Region winners will then be invited to a global championship for the chance to win a grand prize of $75,000.

We’d say it’s time to start polishing your Mace of Divine Intervention.
