Following 2003's critically acclaimed Contra: Shattered Soldier, Neo Contra takes the traditionally 2D realms of the long-running series into a fully interactive futuristic pseudo-3D play area. Bill Rizer, the grizzled hero of the series, also makes his return as the player runs, jumps and blasts their way through a series of apocalyptic stages inhabited by a huge array of alien and humanoid adversaries, which give way to towering 'Boss' creatures that will test the mettle of even the greatest shoot 'em up fans.
Neo Contra also introduces a new hero to the franchise in the form of Genbei Jaguer Yagyu, a mysterious Samurai character who adds a second fighting style to the gung-ho action. Players controlling either Genbei or Rizer will find themselves assailed from all directions as Neo Contra's army of aliens throw everything at the two heroes. The many attacks can be countered using the weapons the pair carry, while destroying certain adversaries will reward them with a number of enhanced weapon systems.
The 3D backdrops are also fully interactive and, in addition to using levels and ledges to avoid certain attacks, huge parts of the landscape can be blown away in the heat of battle. Buildings collapse and huge installations are laid waste as Neo Contra ups the action ante over its frenetic predecessors. With impressive CGI sequences, unrelenting action and some of the biggest adversaries seen in a shoot 'em up Neo Contra is certain to be one of the most explosive titles in the near future.
