In the world of mixed marketing, I'm sure this makes perfect sense: 7-11 stores will now sell you your copy of Wrath of the Lich King. Yes, that's right, everyone's favorite 24-hour convenience store is no longer simply the place where you pick up some beef jerky, an energy drink, a six-pack of beer and a big Slurpy. Now you can pick up a selection of best-selling games, for both PC and consoles. Current plans are for 7-11 to have WotLK on hand the day it launches. Yes, really.
This week also featured the very latest in advice columns, Ask Elvyra. Unlike any other advice
columns in the world, Ask Elvyra deals exclusively with virtual problems. Troubled readers share their problems with veteran MMO gamer and all-around sage Elvyra, who gives them some insights and solutions to help them overcome their woes. This week's column is entitled Ask Elvyra: The Guild Drama Edition. Her readers, troubled by raspy-voiced guild officers or, worse yet, foot-fondling guild mates, get all the help they need in dealing with their online lives. From the You've Got To Be Kidding Me, No Seriously Tell Me You're Lying department comes this unbelievable story of corporate stupidity. It's in 4 parts, so pay close attention, mkay?
- A production company called Multiverse will be making a Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO.
- They are also making a “virtual interactive learning experience” called Places in Time: Titanic.
- They've partnered with film director James Cameron on the project.
- They're working on the Multiverse client, which will enable players to move from one virtual world to another.
- In order to accomplish all of the above, they've chosen to put the Firefly MMO on indefinite hold.
Allow me, at this juncture, to respond with a few talking points – questions, really – of my own. Ready?
- Is there anyone out there that would really like to play a Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO? Anyone?
- Maybe some of the people who play one of the kid-oriented Disney MMOs, or maybe some folks who play Ponystars? No? Didn't think so.
- Is there anyone out there that would find Places in Time: Titanic to be a compelling online experience? Nobody? Ok, so that's settled.
- Now, how many folks would enjoy seeing the sci-fi classic Firefly turned into an MMO? Yes, I see 500,000 hands just went up. Thanks for participating.
'Nuff said. Thanks for playing along there, friends...
Finally, in a week that features very fast MMO videos, we bring you this: Zero Punctuation's Eve Online review. If you're not already familiar with Zero Punctuation, it's the video review blog of one Yahtzee, a fast-talking, hard-playing gamer. Forget the fact that Yahtzee has chosen to review a game that's been on the market for years; that's completely normal for him. What's important is that he not only reviews the game while speaking 10,000 words per minute, he injects his bitter sarcasm into every single sentence. It's epic and well worth watching.
Well, my fellow MMORPG fanbois and fangurls, that's all the news for now. For your everyday fix of MMO news (available in regular or extra snarky), you can visit us at over at WanderingGoblin.com.
